About Mental Health and Addiction Services at Waikato DHB

Waikato DHB area services the Coromandel Peninsula to Meremere, south to National Park and east to Tokoroa, a region with a land mass of over 21,000 kilometres. We are in the unique position of having half of our 400,000 plus population living in rural locations and the other half in towns or cities.

Considering relocation to the Waikato or New Zealand? Let us help you and your family access affordable housing, good schools and vibrant communities.

The Mental Health Service for Older People has a 15 bed inpatient assessment unit, a full multidisciplinary community team and a memory service and is based at the large tertiary Waikato Hospital in Hamilton. The hospital campus has seen a period of significant rebuilding and upgrading. The inpatient unit and community team are co-located with Older Persons and Rehabilitation services in a purpose built Older Persons and Rehabilitation hub. MHSOP works in an integrated way between inpatient beds and community work meaning that no two days are ever the same. We offer you an opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation in mental health and addictions service delivery; as well as a number of ongoing quality improvement initiatives. The hospital is the seat of a successful psychiatry registrar training program and involvement in both teaching and service improvement is encouraged. The Academic Department on campus is a branch of the University of Auckland, allowing research interests to be explored.

We're looking for:

  • A Psychiatrist who is vocationally registered, or is eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • Ideally, you will also hold a recognised certificate of post graduate training in Psychiatry of Old Age.
  • Someone who is versatile, flexible and has a passion for working in a team approach
  • Someone excited about and willing to contribute to, and participate in change
  • Someone who is passionate about eliminating health inequities for Māori people

We offer you

  • an excellent relocation and support package
  • supportive and caring colleagues
  • challenge and stretch
  • a commitment to continuing education and professional development
  • active peer review groups and a recognised training scheme for Fellows of the RANZCP
  • the ability to contribute to systemic change.
